The voice asked what the little star wanted to be, it hung there suspended as it does and thought about the infinite options it now has as a purpose for being born as a star. It remained silent for some time. “Should I ask again some other time?”
“No, I don’t know what I want to be. I just want to be a star and stay right here.”
“You don’t want to do anything except stay right here!? All the other stars are in constellations and are traveling to great places all over the universe. Why don’t you do something like that? I just gave you the option with endless possibilities and you choose nothing. Of all the things you chose the one thing that is actually nothing at all. That is what you did. You chose nothing.”
“I don’t know what I want to do so I chose nothing,” said the star.
“Well, you now are what you chose to be,” the voice informed the star as the voice vanished.
The star hung there suspended as it does and pondered its permanent but familiar situation.
(Some time passes)
Word of a planet that has other beings inhabiting it reached the star. The star began watching the planet as many of the others did. The star was in awe of this planet and it watched the planet constantly because of the curiosity and amazement that the planet generated in the star’s mind. The star began to realize the inhabitants of the planet were watching the star.
“Why are the planet dwellers watching me?” the star asked itself.
The star felt a little embarrassed by all the attention but continued to focus on the planet to understand why it was getting all this attention.
(Some time passed)
The voice returned to the star to ask what has come of its earlier decision.
“I have come to find out how you feel about your decision from the last time I spoke to you. Are you pleased with your decision?”
“I do not know whether the out-come of my decision is good or bad. I would like to know why the inhabitants of the planet continue to watch me? They watch and study me more than the other stars, even though they are pieces of beautiful constellations,” the star reported.
“I have been to the planet and I also noticed that they found you more interesting than all the others. I asked them why they look at you so often. They noticed that you do not move like the others, that you are stationary. Your nothingness has become very important to the planet’s inhabitants’ lives. They use you as a directional standard. Without you, navigation on the planet would be very difficult and the inhabitants would not be able to find their way.”
This brought great joy to the star. The star shown brighter from its new found purpose.
“I know what I must do now, I must continue to shine even though I do not move. I want to remain here, for the planet and its inhabitants.”
The star hung there, suspended as it does shinning bright for the inhabitants. The inhabitants named the star to signify its importance, The North Star.
